Beginning of the 4th book

The beginning of the fourth book is one of the elements that make it my favorite book of the series. It is the absolute best beginning yet, especially compared to the second and third books. The opening chapter is not some boring description of Harry's life at the Dursley's, its a vivid and dark description of a killing. Even the first time I read this book I didn't think that the first chapter was just a dream, I knew it had really happened. Also, the Quidditch World Cup, which is a little past where I read to so far, is an amazing begining to this book. Also, the Tri-Wizard Tournament is amazing to of course.

I think some people stopped reading the series, or took a break at least, for several reasons. One, the time it took for it to come out. Two, the size probobly intemidated some people that wern't really fans. Third, some parents might not have wanted to read this one to thier children or didn't let their children buy it because it's slightly darker than the first three books.

For me, the second and third reasons are reasons why I liked the book more than the first three, but I was around 14 years oldwhen it was released and have always had a love of action and darknes in both books and in film.

  1. The 4th book was my favorite as well (4th movie is my fav. too so far). I am victim of bad memory so I cannot recall whether or not I had a falling out when the 4th Harry Potter book arrived. I will admit that I am a pretty slow reader, especially with fiction because I like to take everything in, so I think that I finished the 3rd book somewhat close to the release of the 4th book (Yes, I would put the 3rd book down months at a time, it did not take me years to read 400 pages haha). Anyhow, I think your reasons as to why people had a falling out are pretty accurate. The size of the book was extremely intimidating for someone who was not a big reader. I don't recall whether or not I found the beginning of the book disturbing or awesome, but if I had to guess I would say awesome. As for me, I really enjoyed the 4th book because of the tri-wizard tournament and Mad-Eye Moody. I really like the character and is one of my favorites next to Lupin and Snape. When re-reading the 4th book, I also noticed that there isn't this sort of huge mystery that is the main plot line of the book (books 1-3). Yes, it is a mystery as to who put Harry's name into the goblet, but that is meaningless since Harry must concentrate on how to win the tournament let alone survive. It was just really exciting for me to read about this non-stop action with minor moments of suspense rather than 295 pages of suspense and 5 pages of answers (I am referring to the first three books).

Nice post, the question as to why people stopped reading at this point is pretty bizare to me because this book was awesome!

  2. this is a great beginning, but WHY is this darkness so amazing? what is it about the death at the beginning that you are attracted to? what is changing in harry's world?
